A resolution designating this week “100th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Remembrance Week” was approved in the U.S. Senate at the request of Sen. Kirsten Gilliibrand.
That fire, in a Manhattan building where the employer had locked the doors to prevent employees from leaving their work stations, caused the death of 146 garment workers, 129 of them young female immigrants being paid substandard wages. It was the fourth-largest loss of life resulting from an industrial accident in this nation’s history, and marked a turning point in the fight for safe and decent working conditions in what were known as sweatshops.
