Dear Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden,
As a mother of a soldier currently serving in Afghanistan and a member of Military Families Speak Out, I am grateful for your support of our troops and their families and we all want to assist you in this mission. I agree that it is a moral obligation of our country to honor and serve military families.
With so few serving, it is important to bring awareness to the overwhelming sacrifices our service men and women make on a daily basis. Multiple redeployments have wrecked havoc on our troops and their families who are dealing with devastating issues like skyrocketing suicides, PTSD, and the emotional and physical stress when a loved one is serving.
We have made it too easy for Americans to ignore the war and these sacrifices. In reality, if Americans were required to pay the upfront costs of war via increased taxes or participate in “shared sacrifice” in the form of a draft, the war in Afghanistan would have been over long ago.
I am asking you to take your mission to its next logical step by stopping the problem entirely – End The War. The majority of military families, as well as the American public, believe it’s time to bring our troops home.
We must weigh our military’s sacrifice as well as the huge cost, $120 billion this year alone, against the limited gains achieved by “nation building” in Afghanistan.
Our military has done its job extremely well. Our military’s success is greatly undermined by an extremely corrupt Karzai government as well as a Pakistan government that provides sanctuary to the Taliban. Just these 2 conditions alone make the job of “winning” quite impossible.
We have been told for years that there is no military solution in Afghanistan. It is time to end the war and turn our attention to diplomacy and political negotiations.
No one else should die, or be severely injured for a war without a meaningful purpose or foreseeable end.
Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden, you both have highly respected voices and the President and Vice President listen to your counsel. Please use your influence to ensure that we bring our troops home and end the war quickly. Our troops and our country have already sacrificed too much.
