Breaking: critical vote today‏

Dear Emily,

I have urgent news that I wanted to get to you right away. Today the House is voting on H.R. 3 -- extreme legislation that is dangerous to women’s health, would actually raise taxes, and could be one of the most radical assaults on women’s health in our lifetime. The vote is less than 24 hours away, we need to stand up right now to make our voices heard.

Remember the Republican campaign rhetoric from 2010? This Congress was supposed to about jobs and the economy. But we know now it was all smoke and mirrors. Rather than working together to create jobs, Republicans are proposing legislation that is extreme and divisive. Congress should be strengthening middle class families, not trying to stop people from getting health services.

Since day one, the Republican leadership made these extreme attacks on reproductive rights its top priority, and if the GOP gets its way, the effects on women and their families would be devastating. This bill denies coverage for a full range of health services for any woman who receives her health insurance through Medicaid and tries to do the same in the private market. And by changing the tax system, it effectively punishes private health care decisions made by individuals and small businesses. It’s simple: all of the bill’s provisions hurt women and their families.

We saw in the budget debate that our voices can really make a difference. That's why it's so important for you to join me right now to tell Republicans stop the attacks on women and work together to find solutions to the challenges facing America’s middle-class families.

You all have been with me time and time again fighting these battles, and I can tell you -- your voices matter in this debate. I hope you will join me again.

Thank you for all you do.
