NY-26: GOP 'radical right-wing social engineering' helps Dems

Michael Stone

voters in New York, and across the country, are frightened by reports of Republican plans to end Medicare.

Recently House Republicans voted in overwhelming numbers for Rep. Paul Ryan's budget proposal, a proposal that would end Medicare as currently configured.
Indeed, GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich went so far as to call the Republican proposal to end the cherished and loved health program for senior citizens "radical right-wing social engineering." And apparently many New Yorkers took to heart Newt's words of wisdom.

In addition to concerns about Republican social engineering, another factor in Democrat Hochul's surprisingly strong showing is a third candidate, Democrat turned Tea Party supporter Jack Davis. No doubt the Tea Party vote is splitting the traditional Republican vote. The special election in New York's 26th distirct became necessary after Republican Rep. Chris Lee resigned in disgrace. Lee resigned after shirtless photos and allegations of extramarital romance via Craigslist went viral.
Many observers see the NY-26 race as a precursor for election 2012. As such, it looks as if Democrats may be poised for victory in 2012, while House Republicans try to get distance from a politically toxic GOP agenda.
