Bill Clinton Weighs Obama’s Challengers

Former President Bill Clinton is dismissive of Republican hopes for making Barack Obama a one-term president.
“I’d be surprised if he’s not re-elected. I’ve always thought he would be,” Clinton said Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” citing the president’s success in averting a depression in the wake of the financial crisis, and restructuring the auto industry.

That said, Clinton had some favorable assessments of a few GOP challengers, especially the ones he termed more “moderate” candidates. He even offered praise for Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who is decidedly not in that category.
On Jon Huntsman:“I think he’s quite an impressive man. He’s refreshingly kind of un-hidebound, and comes across as non-ideological. Conservative, but non-ideological and practical.”
On Mitt Romney:“Gov. Romney is doing a better job as a candidate this time than he did four years ago. He comes across as more relaxed and more convicted about what he did do. Less willing to just be forced into apologizing for it.”
On Michele Bachmann:
“I’m not surprised by how well Michele Bachmann has done. I’ve been watching her speak. She comes across as a real person — all those foster children she’s taken in and children she’s raised.”
On the whole GOP field:“I don’t think I’m well-informed enough to make a judgment about that. The ones I like are the ones you think are more moderate. Because I think they’re a little more connected to the real world; I think they’d be formidable. But I’m afraid if I say anything nice about them, they’ll lose for sure.”
