Michele Bachmann’s Gay Stepsister Attended Obama’s Inauguration

 — Years ago, Michele Bachmann's openly gay stepsister Helen LaFave protested at one of Michele's anti-gay rallies. Since then, Helen has kept a low profile, but she continues to support liberal politics: Salon's Natasha Lennard recently uncovered a video of Helen and long-term partner Nia Wronski attending Obama's 2009 presidential inauguration. The duo got their tickets "through one of the congresspeople" and drove for two days "with six family members."
In a Minnesota accent even thicker than Bachmann's, La Fave told a videographer:
It's very important to me to be here, just because it's starting something new. Just the movement through the country, it seems like a reawakening of the country, and to be part of that, and to see the first African-American president take office, it's very meaningful.
Wronski added:
Breaking of the old definitions and old boxes, and looking for more of those barriers to tumble down. You know, black people getting a big symbolic step towards what they should have had a long time ago. I'm looking forward to the first woman now, and you know, the first gay person or whatever. I'm hoping they all slip away, those barriers.
How Bachmann can look at these mild-mannered ladies—one of whom she grew up with—and conclude that acknowledging their relationship would destroy America is beyond me. I can't even summon the sarcasm to write a joke about it. It's too stupid.
