Occupy Tulsa: Police Pepper Spray Sitting Protesters

Oh yes, OBVIOUSLY a group of dangerous criminals. I'm surprised they weren't tased.

At approximately 3AM EST on Wednesday, the Tulsa police department arrested several members of Occupy Tulsa for refusing to leave Centennial Green in violation of an 11PM curfew. This is, in and of itself, nothing remarkable. What occurred during the arrests however, makes me wonder exactly when our country decided that casually assaulting peaceful protests became fashionable.

As several protesters sat in a circle and linked arms to nonviolently resist their arrest, the police began to lean over and pepper spray them. One video shown on last nights’ Countdown with Keith Olbermann shows an officer holding one of the protesters head still to get a better shot at his eyes.

“Asked about the use of pepper spray, Chief Webster said simply “pepper spray is used in cases where there is resistance. In this case, it was only used only on persons that were actively resisting arrest.”

I’m not a police officer but I’m having some difficulty imagining that the regulations for use of force, and pepper spray IS a use of force, include quietly sitting in a circle. It is unclear how a person refusing to get off the ground can be persuaded to do so by blinding them.

There is a serious problem with the police in our country. Minorities have known it for decades and now the rest of us are getting a good look at what our police force has devolved into. “To Protect and Serve” is just a quaint reminder of a time when the cops were supposed to give a damn about their charges. Now they simply follow the orders of the 1% and violence is just another tool to enforce their will.
