NARAL Pro-Choice America
Dear Stuart,
The U.S. House of Representatives continues the War on Women with an abortion ban on women in Washington, D.C.
The National Right to Life has made this ban its top legislative priority.
Stop the War on Women!
Anti-choice leaders in Congress are attacking women’s rights once again. This time, they are trying to ban abortion for women in Washington, D.C. who face complications later in pregnancy.
The entire U.S. House of Representatives needs to hear strong opposition from pro-choice constituents like you. Even if your lawmaker is anti-choice, we need you to speak out against this bill now.
Today, a subcommittee dominated by anti-choice male politicians refused to let D.C.’s lone representative, Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, testify on behalf of her constituents – the very women who will be affected if this ban becomes law. Is this starting to sound familiar?
The bill is just cruel. It would ban abortion after 20 weeks for women in Washington, D.C. – regardless of her situation. There are no exceptions for situations where continuing a pregnancy will place a woman’s health or ability to have children in the future at risk.
Any family going through pregnancy hopes for a happy and healthy baby. That’s what Christy Zink hoped for during her pregnancy. But she received a devastating diagnosis. The fetus had severe anomalies and part of the brain had failed to develop altogether. Christy and her family made the difficult decision to have an abortion at 21 weeks. If the ban proposed by this bill had been in effect, she would have been denied options at a time when she and her family needed them most.
The bill would ban abortion for women like Christy who face a dire complication later in pregnancy, no matter the situation. Please help us stop it.
The extreme National Right to Life Committee has made this bill its top legislative priority this year. Obviously, anti-choice politicians from across the country are lining up to move this ban forward, while they deny Rep. Holmes Norton a chance to even speak.
Here’s what I imagine Rep. Holmes Norton would have said: we can’t know every woman’s situation. That’s why we must stop politicians from taking away decisions from women who live in our nation’s capital.
Make sure you send this message to Congress.
Thanks for all you do to protect women’s freedom and privacy.
In solidarity,
Nancy Keenan
