Dear Stuart:
The holidays and end of the year are always times for reflection -- this year more than others.

As my family prepares to celebrate, our joy is diminished knowing there are families in Newtown, Connecticut around whose holiday tables there will forever be an empty chair. Our thoughts and hearts are with those families, knowing their pain is unimaginable. From that darkness, there are glimmers of light, including the selfless acts of teachers who sacrificed their own lives to protect their students and the hope that out of this horrific tragedy can come common sense solutions that will prevent other families from suffering the needless loss of a loved one.

As I attend my son's hockey games, decorate my home and take my family to view holiday lights, I realize how truly lucky I am. Part of my good fortune is having friends like you. I am so grateful for your support, guidance and camaraderie. Through the ups and downs of the past few months, I have been buoyed by your good will and well wishes. It was because of you that I entered the congressional race and fought to ensure that your voices were heard.

While we did not win, it was because of your support that we came within 1002 votes or 3/10ths of a percent of victory. This was the third closest U.S. House race in the nation and narrowest loss by any Democratic congressional candidate. Unlike the five other contested seats in Illinois, where President Obama carried those districts by margins ranging from 1.3 percent to 17 percent, Illinois' 13th congressional district proved to be a true toss up, with President Obama also losing the district by 3/10ths of a percent.

None of us know what the future holds, but I promise that in whatever arena, I will continue to lend my voice to public discourse about issues that are dear to you and me.

My family and I wish you a peaceful holiday season, surrounded by family and friends.

Best,
