Dear Illinois NORML Supporter,

The new Illinois lawmakers were sworn in last week and we are hopeful that
2013 will bring significant change to cannabis laws in Illinois.  Last
year we were able to decriminalize cannabis in Chicago and we are hoping
to pass a medical cannabis bill, a hemp farming bill, have a full
legalization bill introduced and debated in Springfield this year.  We are
starting to have meetings all over the state and if you would like
meetings closer to where you live please let us know so we can begin that
process.

Unfortunately lawmakers didn't vote for HB 30 before the end of the 97th
General Assembly and with the start of the 98th General Assembly the
legislative process starts over from the beginning.  A medical cannabis
shell bill (an empty bill that is amended at a later date with actual
provisions and details) has been pre-filed by State Rep. Lang. House Bill
1 is the shell bill and until it is amended we will not know the actual
details of the proposed medical cannabis program.

House Bill 1:

Illinois NORML has drafted three legalization bills that we have begun
discussing with lawmakers interested in sponsoring them.  It is extremely
important that we let lawmakers know that we support ending cannabis
prohibition for all adults and if we send elected officials these model
legalization bills our chances of getting them introduced and debated go
up dramatically.

Please take a few moments to go over the bills on our Campaigns page
(http://illinoisnorml.org/ilnorml/campaigns/ ) and email and/or print and
mail them to both your State Representative and State Senator's offices.
If you really want to get their attention set up a meeting to discuss the
bills with them in person and send the draft legislation to both their
district and Springfield offices.

We aim to change cannabis laws in Illinois and the more time we spend in
Springfield at the Capitol the better our chances are of ending these
crazy laws sooner rather than later.  If you can afford to donate to
Illinois NORML so that we can continue our important work convincing
lawmakers to legalize cannabis please donate what you can afford.  We also
have a list of in kind donation items that we need if you would like to
support us that way.

Donations can be made at http://www.illinoisnorml.org/ilnorml/donate or
mailed to 1321 N. Milwaukee Av. PMB #446 Chicago IL 60622

Thank you for supporting Illinois NORML and if you have any questions on
our organization and what we do please do not hesitate to call or email
me.

Sincerely,

Dan Linn
